German Society for Membrane Technology e.V. (DGMT) turns 20. This professional association aims to represent and promote membrane technology and its application in Germany.

The purpose of the DGMT is to offer a communication network and cooperation platform for the membrane technology sector.

Founded in 2000, the DGMT today celebrated its 20th anniversary with a two day event in Duisburg and at the Campus of the Universität Duisburg-Essen.

During the course of this festive event, Hans-Curt Fleming presented the latest state of knowledge and aspects of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) - a substance - produced by microorganisms - he calls the „Perfect Slime“.

In his witty and entertaining presentation the microbiologist highlighted his actual understanding of the functions, properties, and characteristics of the EPS matrix as well as the possibilities to strengthen or weaken it.

But not only bacteria are known to produce EPS. Archaea, Fungi and algae can also form EPS and thus the „Perfect Slime“ is ubiquitous.

The regulation and the factors which trigger or inhibit EPS production are still very poorly understood yet all the more fascinating. For further details, check his book: The Perfect Slime
